In most cases, water heater noise is caused by sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank. This sediment causes over-heating and boiling water which in turn makes the popping sounds. In many cases, a flush will reduce or eliminate the problem. However, if the buildup is severe, the tank may need to be replaced.
